Iam laughed because Marlee said Bitch then girl voice for her. I remember I saw this video previous on Deafread. my opinion bad example use girl as interpreter if real life then Adults should have discuss private issues without interpreter like this situation on that part of video show! Thank you for share and review it.

Funny show but they shouldn’t have shown that the child would ‘interprete’ for mom. That would give message to people that deaf parents depend on their own children to interpret them. Also, we wouldn’t want our children to be in ‘child labor’. Although this part is funny, I wouldn’t watch that show!

Had I been in the actress’s shoes, I would have graciously declined the role unless the director would come to terms by being willing to be educated that it is immorally wrong “to use” a child as an interpreter. I see that one of the “Desperate Housewives” did gently make a hint to her that it was wrong “to use” a child. And I see that the diretor and audiences make fun of the unthinkably obedient actress for kowtowing to the director for ordering the child to interpret. Why did she fail to
rebel WITH a cause?

It hurts the future psychology of children who are “used” by their parents.

As far as I know, it is the actress’s second time for allowing herself to be mocked at. I would not be surprised to hear her whisper to other
people, “Lighten up. It is OKAY to make fun of me.” She is an actress with whom I have never been impressed!

    Anonymous,
First, that is just a comedic show, it would be like saying Jackass the tv show is immorally wrong as well, but ppl watch it, by choice i might add. Right? So dont make such quick judgements on whats being done on TV, kick back and enjoy it, or dont watch. Besides, that part is total reality! It shouldnt happen but it does, and them doing that skit was right on. THAT IS HOW IT IS/WAS!
Second, Marlee did great and if u dont like her then why are u watching her?
Third, As far as Psychology on the children are concerned, Id have to argue that Hearing children have psychology issues as well. As human beings we ALL get some sort of disorder regardless of our parents and upbringing..Its a matter of how WE ALL handle them. I LOVE my parents & deaf friends, and WILL continue to Interpret for them as long as I live, appropriate or inappropriate!
One more thing, how immorally wrong is it that my parents get unqualified interpreters that may or may not be certified that cant relay information properly. Seems to me that everyone needs help wouldnt u agree..?

If you are under the impression that “Desperate Housewives” is to be taken seriously then perhaps you shouldn’t watch the show in the first place. It is comedy. Comedy mocks conventional behavior. As far as I know, Marlee is not here to “impress” anyone. She doesn’t need to. She has an Academy Award, a Golden Globe award and four Emmy nominations to show she is up to the task of being a good actress.

You have every right to not watch a show because it doesn’t appeal to you; that’s what America is about. But to deny her the opportunity to work/perform her craft simply because it doesn’t agree with your principles is not right.

I like the Desperate Housewives shows, but this show does not make a sense to me because she has too much emotions and sensitive issue.

Now, I realized that some deaf parents shouldn’t do that to their children in the reality. That is probably why they need to be aware of it. I’m really glad that I don’t have children. I’m having more fun.

I laughed so hard what I looked at hearing who heard a little girl said, ‘Sexual’ (shocked head) then MM said the end of it..”BITCH” I loves a little girl said, (dont need to say but ) GOT IT. I laughed so hard…I understood what they felt about as Wrong Sample to use A Child for Interpreter as bad sample..I understood as Today We education them to not use that, which was old times… I loves The Humor.

I thought it shows what happens in everyday life. Not every Deaf parent uses their child to interpret but some do, mine included. I thought it was a great clip!!!

Some of deaf peoples have to rely on their children to interprets for them when discuss about something since hearing peoples doesn t know sign languages or does nt have paper to write on in order to commuicate. Of course it s wrong to use our children to interprets for us but we have no choice and need to commuicate with someone. Marlin is a great actress and I don t find anything wrong about her using her daughter to interprets in Desperate Housewives (I don t watch their show since I m not interested in dramas).

This is real life, these types of things happen everyday that deaf parents have to depend on hearing children, No it shouldnt happen but it does. It just shows hearing people how silly they are at times for not being equipped to communicate but go ahead and have a conversation that only they can understand. Deaf mom was emotional and didnt want to wait till they could do a one on one or write to each other.

Worse yet, Marlee Matlin is the VERY same person who played “Sarah” in
– are you ready? — none other than “[Deaf] Children of a Lesser God.”

Yes, she played Sarah. Most actors/actresses tend to play many different roles if they’re lucky, it’s called acting. What’s your point?

I thought that clip was a riot!! Very funny!! That’s the whole point of the show… all of the characters are over the top and a little inappropriate. I certainly wouldn’t watch the show with the idea that any of the the characters are role models.

Of course that kind of conversation is inappropriate for a child to interpret but it happens EVERYDAY and in REAL life the hearing person NEVER thinks anything of it.

I thought Marlee was great!

Unfortunately most TV viewers, especially those watching Desperate Housewives, are not well informed when it comes to Deaf issues. This just perpetuates the idea of using and abusing anyone who can sign instead of an interpreter. We see the funny side of it but most think what happened in the program is acceptable. I’ve never found MM to a particularly talented actor. She’s been lucky to get some good parts and she’s good looking which always helps in showbiz.

This is old world CODA experience. Very realistic. Before ADA, many of us CODAs WERE used for many personal dealings from funerals to parent-teacher conferences to clashes with the neighbor. No malintent from our Deaf parents – just not clear boundaries.

I thought Marlee, and the young actress, did a great job. Let’s support our community in mainstream media! Yes, we wish there were more! But she is paving the way!!

I didn’t see the episode, but from what I gather there was a realistic glimpse into the D/deaf world using a deaf actress. In a lot of cases it probably enlightened people to some ‘hazards of deafness’. I appreciate the realism.

As a Coda, I laughed out loud!!!!!
Every time something strange is about to happen, u hear this certain kind of the same music. Any time u hear it, you know…watch out, something bizarre is going to happen!!! And sure enough, when Marlee called the little girl in,,,the music started to play to warn people that is is not normal!!!!
Marlee was awesome! And thanks for doing it!

I have to say I cracked up laughing so hard thinking, “YEP, thats exactly what happens, go girl”. AS CODAs we are always and forever interpreters for our parents. We are put into situations that are inappropriate sometimes, thats our life! Wether wrong or right. I dont expect HEARING people to understand.

Great job Marley, and that young lil actress was great too! The show itself is silly but common, alot of shows are and ppl DO watch. thanks for taking us back to the old cherished days!

I myself am a CODA and very PROUD of that.I don’t understand why it just a fact of a deaf mother using her daughter to interpt. I have also seen spanish speaking parents use THEIR children to interpet to say that a DEAF parent is wrong for doing the same??? As far as it being wrong I have yet to see any studies stating that CODAs are emotionally or mentally ruined from this behavior. I interpeted for my father quite often I may have learned things. but I feel they made me stronger and wiser. I am now a mother of 5 and feel better equipped to do so THANKS TO MY FATHER!!!! GO JOANNE!!! GO CODA’S

I have not seen MM in that program. But to know what had happened by using hearing kids as interpreter has been an ongoing problem. I have been a teacher to explain right and wrong to use kids as interpreters but to call for an experienced older person to interpretbfor emergency, business or social purposes. The kids may not fully understand enough to interpret properly. They need more training and should not interpret for their parents. As far as the code of ethics goes. If it was a humor in that program with MM as an example. Okay but in reality. It is true. Hope kids will tell their parents or hearing person be it be doctor or police or lawyer to call for qualified interpreter as tax free as their business as write off. Pass the info on to other people. As deaf awareness. Good luck!
