Eastern Canadian Earthquake

Written by Annie Kwon

Talk about the unusual nature event! Earlier today at work around 1:40pm, I felt a tiny trembling. I was confused so I placed my hands on the desk if I actually felt that the building was moving. I thought I was going insane because northeastern states don’t usually get earthquakes. It turns out that earthquake happened near Ottawa, Ontario which is the east-central part of Canada. The magnitude was 5.0 and it lasted for 20 seconds. It was felt across from Toronto to New England and as far as Chicago and Baltimore. Closer to the epicenter of that earthquake, there are minor damages to the buildings and bridges (as in few buildings were damaged) and the power went out across 1300 homes.

This is not the first time I felt an earthquake since I lived in California for more than 10 years. I thought it was unusual to feel an earthquake in New England and it is unusual to have earthquakes here as it is very infrequent. I thought someone put on a loud music down in the hallway and the sound was making the floor tremble. I talked to other people and only few felt it because the rest was too busy to notice it. On Facebook, I noticed that my friends wrote in their status that they were confused about it, too. Whew, I’m not crazy after all.
