I have been profoundly deaf since I was 5 yo and had measles. It is only recently I have been fitted with hearing aids. I have tried hearing aids in the past only to find they made sounds louder but not clearer. The hearing aids I have are only recently invented and are compression aids. I am now 70 and retired; for many years I was unable to work so have no retirement funds to draw on in my old age. I have always found my deafness to be a huge disadvantage. I am sorry to sound so negative, but for some deaf people lack of hearing has made life traumatic.

Let's not lie to ourselves, the others, and our children. We the deaf cannot do everything if we don't have the right accommodations. Further why should employers pay extra to accommodate the disabled if they can hire a nondisabled person with just as good or better qualifications? Come on, get real!

Also I am willing to bet that that deaf fireman portrayed here is not allowed to perform everything a hearing fireman can. Public safety comes first.

well to me being late deafened is very difficult i am finally coming to terms with it after over 20 years!!! still difficult-anyway i think of it as people who cannot see well (i wear glasses and contacts) if they did not have glasses or whatever they would not be able to see--same with deaf wear hearing aids but wearing glasses or contacs is acceptable to people (i have cochlear implant) wore hearing aids for years not perfect but if i dont wear it i can't hear-i put it on i can hear lots better. same thing eys, with ears people just get a bit freaked out when someone says they are deaf-i rarely tell people hubby says you need to tell people but i really don't care if they think i am "stupid" or whatever because I and God know that i am just a person like anyone else-if i choose to tell someone it is for good reason-i try to wear my cochlear as much as i can but somtimes just get tired of trying to "hear" just like people who wear glasses or contacts get tired of wearing them and need to rest their eyes. i am a group exercise instructor-have been doing since before lost hearing i cannot wear my cochlear too much sweat so i hear the bass of the music and my students know and they are so awesome i try to teach them a little sign (i don't know much myself but am trying to learn mostly for family communication) but i thank God i had enuf hearing to be able to continue doing this i love it so much-the little bit of hearing i have in my right ear is what keeps me going and i will continue to do fitness classes until i either fall apart or cannot hear the music anymore at all. i think people need more education on deafness so they can learn how to handle it they are just scared because they don't know-ignorance-and this is something people don't like to talk about TABOO OMG-i had a very big problem myself up until just a few months ago and i am going for it anymore-if people cannot accept it then that is fine i have a few good friends who know and they love me and i love them that is all i need and Gods love-hubby and daughter and me are learning it has been difficult i know it will work out in a good way with time.

What a great motto. We should make bumper stickers not only raise awareness but to serve as an inspiration to those who are struggling to prove themselves as fully functional human beings! "Deaf People Can Do Anything But Hear" Remember, know your limts then go beyond!

I was recently given a topic in my sociology class about why deaf people who say they are not disabled and can do everything hearing people can do are considered to be diabled by the government and receive disability. I can't really find any good information on my topic and could use some help. If anyone has any info or sites please let me know. **Just to clear the air, my son's grandparents are deaf. I'm meaning no disrespect to anyone. I'm just simply asking for help. Thank you!

I'm happy that a very talented Deaf individual steered me towards these video posts. They are very well crafted and beautifully signed. What a clear and eloquent message. I have some video students who i hope can construct narratives in a similar vein. BRAVO!
